Louis XIV, also known as the Sun King or the Grand Monarch, reigned as the King of France from 1643 until his passing in 1715, making his the longest recorded reign of any European monarch in history at 72 years. In the era of absolutism, Louis XIV led France in the centralization of power. In 1661, following the death of his chief minister Cardinal Mazarin, Louis took personal control of the country, continuing the work of his predecessors in establishing a centralized state governed from its capital.

Louis XIV was a firm believer in the divine right of kings and worked to eliminate vestiges of feudalism in France. By compelling many members of the nobility to reside in his opulent Palace of Versailles, he successfully pacified the aristocracy, some of whom had participated in the Fronde rebellion during his childhood. Through these actions, Louis XIV solidified his position as one of the most powerful French monarchs, establishing a system of absolute rule that endured until the French Revolution.

Louis surrounded himself with influential figures in politics, military, and culture, such as Mazarin, Colbert, Louvois, and many others. During his reign, France was a dominant force in Europe and engaged in several wars, including the Franco-Dutch War, the War of the League of Augsburg, and the War of the Spanish Succession. Louis XIV believed that war was essential for his glory and focused on preparations during times of peace. He instructed his diplomats to create advantages for the French military strategically and tactically.

Under Louis XIV's leadership, France reached new heights of military, political, economic, and artistic achievement, earning admiration worldwide. His reign saw France as the leading power in Europe, with a military that was feared and respected.
